Significance of SHRIMP U-Pb dating of the Imperial Porphyry and associated Dokhan Volcanics, Gebel Dokhan, north Eastern Desert, Egypt

SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating was undertaken on two samples of Dokhan Volcanics from the type area at Gebel Dokhan, north Eastern Desert, Egypt. A quartz andesite from the Imperial Porphyry unit has a weighted 206Pb/238U age of 593 f 13 Ma (20). A sample of grey andesite, from 450 m lower in the succession, has a weighted 206Pb/23*U age of 602 + 9 Ma (20). These ages are interpreted to record the t...

Pan-African granite emplacement mechanisms in the Eastern Desert, Egypt

The late Pan-African Fawakhir, Urn Had and Urn Effein Granite Plutons in the Egyptian Central Eastern Desert are small, elongate to circular bodies of pink monzogranite and syenogranite, and grey monzodiorite. Structural investigation of the intrusive contacts of these plutons reveals marginal sub-horizontal intrusive sheets as magma injection along preexisting flat-lying structures including m...

Abu Hamamid Neoproterozoic Alaskan-type complex, south Eastern Desert, Egypt

Abu Hamamid (AH) Neoproterozoic (Sm/Nd model age of 770 ± 20 Ma) mafic–ultramafic intrusion lies along a NE–SW fracture zone in the Shadli Metavolcanic Belt, south Eastern Desert, Egypt. AH intrusion is concentrically zoned with cumulate clinopyroxenebearing dunite core mantled by olivine clinopyroxenite, hornblende clinopyroxenite and hornblende gabbroic rim. The observed crystallization seque...

Geochemical constraints on the tectonomagmatic evolution of the late Precambrian Fawakhir ophiolite, Central Eastern Desert, Egypt

-The Fawakhir ophiolitic sequence is composed mainly of serpentinites, metagabbros, boninitic metagabbros and metavolcanics. The serpentinites have geochemical features similar to those of depleted-mantle peridotites. Major and trace element characteristics show that the ophiolitic metagabbro and metavolcanic rocks are of tholeiitic to calc-alkaline affinity. REE abundances in the metagabbros a...

Petrogenesis of the Wadi Dib alkaline ring complex, Eastern Desert of Egypt

The Wadi Dib magmatic complex is the oldest known alkaline ring complex in the Egyptian part of the Pan-African orogenic belt. Rb-Sr isotope data for seven samples suggest a Vendian age of 578=k16 Ma, and a 87Sr/S6Sr initial ratio of 0.7048±0.0010. The igneous complex has a diameter of 2 km and was emplaced within granodioritic Pan-African host rocks at the intersection of two faults. It shows ...
